Kisampa Conservancy
Kisampa Conservancy represents a remarkable fusion of wildlife conservation and community empowerment in eastern Tanzania. This private community conservation sanctuary adjoins the coastal Saadani National Park and spans 40 square kilometers of land leased from local communities. Founded by the Barbour family, in 2003, with “a vision to increase the standard of living of villagers in surrounding communities”, Kisampa demonstrates how conservation can directly benefit local people.
The conservancy operates on a community-centered model that creates tangible economic opportunities. Five villages and several hundred people are directly involved in and benefit from the sanctuary, with the conservancy paying concession fees for protected land while sourcing supplies and employing staff locally. This approach ensures conservation efforts generate immediate community benefits rather than displacing local livelihoods.
Beyond traditional conservation, Kisampa runs multiple impactful programs. The Tuende Pamoja charity (“Let’s move forward together” in Swahili) channels donations into community-prioritized development projects, with every cent going directly to intended recipients. Kisampa Carbon Zero protects and expands natural habitats that serve as carbon sinks while providing wildlife environments, addressing both local and global environmental challenges.
Your donation supports a proven model where conservation success directly translates to improved community welfare, creating sustainable environmental protection through genuine partnership with local Tanzanian communities.
